Heron deterrent

Herons visiting your pond, what can you do?

You notice there are less fish in your pond, or your favourite fish has gone, you find out its a heron dining on your fish, what can you do?

Decoy heron

These are a plastic heron look-a-like that is supposed to work by herons being "sole hunters" all they really do is give the heron a good laugh and want to join his friend.

Water jets

There is available a sensor which when it detects movement activates a water jet for a set period of time. These do work, but have to be connected to a hose and tap which must be left switched on. Unless you have an available outside tap and are able to bury / hide the hose and there is no hose pipe ban,  also being as they detect movement they also detect people.

Trip wire / electric fence

These are  "does what it says on the tin" You put them around the perimeter of the pond, but herons have been known to step over them.

Net / grille

A net covering your pond will ensure herons can not get in to take any fish, but even a black net does not look that nice.

Other

I have seen taught wires at around 45cm centres fixed at one end of the garden (the main house)  to a wide shed at the other (the width of the garden) These were around 2.5 m up in the air so you can walk safely under them. Not everyone has a house and or shed as wide as the garden, and the wires must be kept taught at all times.
